Multiplying $10 - The Parable of The Talents

At my church this last week everyone that attended the service was given a $10 bill and asked to use their skill, talent, and influence to multiply the money for the advancement of God’s kingdom. The intention is not to bring the money back to our local church (LifePoint Christian Church) but to put the money to work in God’s kingdom, whether it is for one of the missions that we support or any other ministry that we would like to support. Check out the video:

If you’re interested in helping me multiply my $10 then I would love it if you would send whatever you can via the link below. Any amount would be appreciated or consider matching my $10 with $10 of your own. Note: you don’t have to have a Paypal account to use the button below - you can use your debit card (please don’t use a credit card!) or if you really don’t want to use the on-line method you could send a check made out to “LifePoint Christian Church” PO Box 953923, Lake Mary, FL 32795, and in the memo line put “SOFP” so that our secretary knows to forward the money on to School of Fish.

Thanks and God bless!

Steve & Donna's Going Away Party

CP-steve-laceyCP-donna-lacey You're All Invited! As you may know, Steve and Donna Lacey are moving away from us!  This is happy and sad  news.  It's sad because they've been a huge part of LifePoint for the last few years (Steve is the reason we have been recording since 2003 and Donna has been faithfully setting up chairs and running the computer for us during worship).  It's happy because of WHY they are moving.  They are following God's call on their life.  They are going to Nashville in order to continue a ministry that they've started with the Neimans called, School of Fish Productions - I won't get into the whole "what it's about" here at the blog, you can read about it at www.schooloffish.org.  Suffice to say, it's a gutsy move on their part and a testimony to their faith.

Stefanie and I are hosting a big going away party for them and you're invited to attend!  Please consider coming to our place anytime after 6pm to say farewell to some really great people.  I've kind of billed this to be a "drop in party" which means even if you can't be there for the whole thing that's OK - just stop by for a little while on Saturday evening to say "bye" and wish them well, etc.

I would love to say that I'm providing all of the food and drink for the evening but the truth is that Dave Ramsey has other plans for my budget (gulp)...so...even though I hate to sound cheap, please consider bringing some small snack food with you to share with others -  or bring a couple bucks to pitch in and we'll grab a pizza, some wings, or whatever.

I don't exactly want to put my address out here so if you don't know where I live just drop me a line at phil@lifepointchurch.com for directions if you need them.

I FORGOT TO MENTION THE FIRST TIME - BRING THE KIDS TOO - ALL ARE WELCOME!

Three Ideas For Better Arrangements

Have you ever thought of yourself as an arranger of music?  If you’re the worship leader in charge of song selection, charting, and conducting band practice then you should.  Even if you’re a only a musician in the band you should always approach the music with the attitude of an arranger.  What’s an arranger do?  It might seem obvious – the arranger arranges the music.  But what does that mean?  Bottom line, the arranger is conscious of every instrument and part during the song.  The arranger makes key decisions to determine which instruments are needed, when they should be played, and more importantly – when they shouldn’t be played.  The goal is to create flow.  If done well, the song stays interesting to the listener from beginning to end.  This is especially important in worship music where a song may consist of only two or three sections (e.g. verse, chorus, bridge) and just a handful of chords.  In worship, simple songs work great but it’s important to pay special attention to the instrumentation and flow in order to keep the song flowing throughout the course of the music.

Three Tiered View of Music
When I think of music I see it in 3 tiers.  The first tier is the foundation and is made up by the instruments that exist in the lowest frequencies like kick drum and bass.  The third tier sits on top and is comprised of instruments that occur in higher frequencies.  A few common examples include hi-hat, cymbals, higher register keys, and upper fretted guitar rhythm parts.  The 2nd tier is in the middle and is most critical.  This is considered the mid-range of the music and includes acoustic guitars, piano, electric guitars, organ, and most important – vocals.

3 Quick Steps to Improving Background Vocals in Worship

Arguably, the most important part of the Arguably, the most important part of the worship band is the vocals. This is certainly not meant to detract from any other key element of the band, but one must admit that when we talk about congregational singing the significance of a well executed vocal performance is immense. However, this is probably one of the main areas where so many of us as worship leaders go wrong. There’s a lot of pressure as a worship leader to do more with vocal arrangements – to add more vocal team members or increase complexity of the arrangements. Sometimes our vocal team members feel the need to “over perform” their vocal parts.

I'm still on this Missouri State University thing so here's my next podcast - posted remotely from my humble dorm in Missouri.

Yo ho ho. Finally got another podcast out! Thanks for being oh so patient with me, everybody. This show is basically a lot of shoutouts to my new myspace friends as well as a little info on what’s coming up in the future for Baldworshipleader.com Blog and Podcast. If you are someone who’s interested in worship leading on any level and would like to help me make the Baldworshipleader.com site and podcast better, please consider taking this quick little survey that I made. I would really appreciate it! (see link to the right - just under “Asides”).
